My pay as a substitute/aide was far below what it would have been as a regular teacher. I stayed there for three years, while working toward a certificate in special education. When two math teaching positions opened up, I applied (I was 46). One person who was hired was 23; the other was 25. I was not even considered for the positions.

Since I had only Catholic-school teaching experience, they did not have to pay me for my experience. However, I have two master’s degrees (one in biostatistics, one in math education), plus additional credits, which made me much more expensive than the 23/25-year-olds. I would happily have taken the job at the salary the 23-year-old probably received, but I was not allowed to do so.
