We continue these traditions each year without any consideration as to their meaning. When I was younger, my mother never allowed us to trick or treat. She always shut us in and burned candles. We felt like we were being abused and she never told us why we could not go out with the other kids. Thankfully, no one put toilet paper in our trees. I have only recently read up on Halloween and the history of the Jack-O-Lantern. I get her meaning now, I just wished she could have relaxed.
